Brighter Times Ahead for Quality Hotels

By Kester Eddy

THE hotel market in Hungary, which has been through a difficult patch since 2000, is expected to improve in the next three years as growth in demand outpaces new capacity. This, in turn, will make the market more attractive for investment, senior executives of Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels told the press last week in Budapest.

The flow of new hotels on the market in Budapest, coupled with the downturn in tourism worldwide after 2001, means that occupancy of four- and five-star hotels stands at 65% and average room rates – despite the improved recent demand – are a mere e79 per night.

This compares with Warsaw and Prague, where rates are at e86 and e103 respectively, the agency said. Continue reading

The statement brings relief to Hungary's racing fans as well as businesses that saw profitable times from this year's race.

Some 184,000 fans made their way to the race itself, and as many as 1.6 million Hungarians watched it on television.

Meeting with Ecclestone after the race, Mónika Lamperth, Hungary's Local Government and Regional Development Minister, presented him with a diploma "for bringing the race to Hungary and keeping it here." Continue reading

Tourism Figures Good

By Alex Kahu

ACCORDING to recent data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), 7.2 million foreign visitors arrived in Hungary in the first quarter of 2006, 76% of whom spent only one day in the country, with only 24% staying overnight. Compared with the same period of 2005, there was a nearly 20% increase in the number of one-day stays, but the number of stays exceeding three days decreased by eight percentage points, adding up to a 7% decrease of the total time spent in Hungary at 16.4 million guest-days.

The "shortening" of visits abroad is an international trend, Dr Gábor Galla, CEO of Hungary Tourism Zrt, told The Budapest Sun.

More people are taking shorter holidays several times a year, including one-day or "long-weekend" trips, instead of one long summer holiday, he explained. Continue reading
